CHARACTER
NAME: Soubi Agatsuma
CANON: Loveless
CANON POINT: Chapter 63
AGE: 21
BACKGROUND: link

PERSONALITY:
CW: Child abuse, including sexual and physical.
Soubi Agatsuma is a person who is completely defined by his past. When Soubi was little, his parents died in a car accident with him as the lone survivor. His mother's former student, now headmaster of the school, Ritsu; took him in. Ritsu was a twisted man who had been in love with Soubi's mother and was angry she had turned him down when he had been a literal child. Still obsessed over her as a grown adult, Ritsu's goal was to turn Soubi into his slave since he could never have his mother. Physically (and later sexually), Soubi was tortured on a near-daily basis. Ritsu basically tortured him to train Soubi into having an extremely high pain tolerance to become the best fighter possible and it did work. Soubi can endure so much pain it seems almost inhuman. Ritsu made Soubi what he is today and because of him, Soubi believes himself to be nothing but an object to be owned. To Soubi, it’s uncomfortable to be seen as a human being. It unsettles him and he simply doesn’t know how to handle it. His master, Seimei, says at one point “you’re so broken that it’s boring” and he is right. Soubi is extremely broken and honestly sees no purpose in his life other than to be owned. That’s truly all he wants. Or so he thinks. Has been made to think.

Soubi takes this role so seriously it’s all he has in his life and it affects him in a lot of ways. Since Ritsu gave him away, Seimei left him and got another fighter, and even Soubi's parents dying? Soubi believes he is worth nothing. Someone who can be tossed aside because people leave him. It's happened so many times before. People leave him and if he cannot have a master then obviously he must not be worth much as an object, right? He is someone who wants to be owned, but it appears like nobody wants to own him. This bothers him so greatly this seems to be the real reason why he is not happy with Ritsu. Not because Ritsu abused him, though Soubi complains how Ritsu did a few mean things (and never mentions the actual abuse he went through), but because Ritsu did not ever become his master and gave him to someone else. In the Loveless world, everybody has a true name and a destined partner. Unless you’re a blank fighter. Like Soubi. Never meant to have a real partner or have your own name.

Soubi's abuse has left him very stunted in emotional and mental growth. Soubi is extremely childish. When he finds out Seimei got another fighter, Soubi breaks their finger out of jealousy. The finger that has Seimei's true name on it. He has a pretty short temper and seems to be in a bad mood quite often. Throughout the story, there are times where Ritsuka, Seimei’s younger brother and Soubi’s ‘second master’, seems to show more emotional maturity than Soubi and he’s twelve years old. To Soubi, this actual twelve-year-old is his new master and Soubi pushes this role onto Ritsuka over and over. While Soubi cares a great deal for him truly, Soubi's desperate need to belong to someone tends to trump what is best for Ritsuka. This results in a lot of inappropriate behavior because he doesn't have a good idea about boundaries. Not that he doesn’t care about him because he does. It’s for Ritsuka’s sake that he speaks up against Seimei, something unimaginable for Soubi before he had ever met Ritsuka. He cares but he was never taught how to care about someone and what to do.

Soubi isn't exactly good with people and his social skills are pathetic. He made his first friend with Kio and even then it was because Kio didn't ever give up on trying to be Soubi's friend. However, everybody told Kio that Soubi was awful with people and it's been shown that he really is. Unless he has a reason to be polite, he's usually short and very cold. Possibly because he is so immature himself, Soubi gets along with children quite well. Shown with most children in the story and even Kio points out how well Soubi does get along with them. It's easy to assume most of Soubi's issues tie in with adults, shown with Ritsuka's teacher when she's in trouble. He insults her and when she's in danger, only saves her because he knows it'd upset Ritsuka if she got hurt. But with Ritsuka’s school friend Yuiko when she's sad, he offers to buy her ice cream and compliments her while fully meaning it. He does like Yuiko and when he says he thinks she's a good person, he completely means it. He offers a home to Natsuo and Youji when they have none and will go homeless and is only gruff with them because of their bratty behavior but he truly does like them. Even though Soubi says he finds Kio irritating, he still rushes to Kio's aid and opens up to Kio which is a rare feat with Soubi. Soubi isn't incapable of making relationships with people but it is highly difficult for him.

Yet Soubi can do a decent job as coming off as a capable adult if you don’t look too hard. He goes to college and lives on his own but he also cannot hold down a job and has to be constantly reminded of his college work. He is a skilled painter and many people tend to compliment his works. He cooks and shows a lot of skill in that as well. However it seems as if he only goes through the motions like a robot. Kio even says that before Soubi met Ritsuka, he was like a ghost. Soubi can put up a good act. While there's a lot of things Soubi doesn't understand, he does know that standing out isn't good and some things will raise attention that Soubi doesn't need to be raised.

In the end, people are not born good nor do they know everything. You are what you are taught to be and Soubi struggles with this. Only thanks to his relationship with Ritsuka has he begun to wonder if maybe he does have his own wants and maybe he doesn’t want to be mistreated. In the end, Soubi is struggling to know who he is and what he should do as he stands at a crossroads.

POWERS/ABILITIES: In the Loveless universe, there’s a secret world of fighters and sacrifices. Fighters being able to do spells which is more like slam poetry/rap battles brought to life as they battle each other with words and sacrifices take most of the damage. For example, if Soubi says "restrain" then some form of restraint will be on the person like they're chained down or tied up. Soubi, as a fighter, is actually very strong and it’s constantly talked about. It's been shown that Soubi can hold his own in a fight against a pair without the help of a sacrifice taking the brunt of the damage. Also shown is that he can use his powers to alter memories which he does with Ritsuka's teacher so she doesn't remember the Zero boys.

Thanks to Ritsu's abuse, Soubi has a freakishly high pain tolerance. He has his hand nailed through and doesn't make a single sound. He even rips his hand from the nail and still makes no sound. He can still feel pain, though.

INVENTORY: Only his cellphone.

MOONBLESSING: Cordis
